The American Birth Control Movement - Free Essay Example

Humans have been practicing forms of contraception or birth control since ancient times. Some of the earliest records of this are in Ancient Egypt, 1850 BC, where they used a mixture of honey, acacia leaves and lint to block sperm in the vagina. Traditional forms of contraception have varied greatly throughout human history, but can be defined as the deliberate use of artificial methods or other techniques to prevent pregnancy as a consequence of sexual intercourse. Modern day contraceptive methods include hormonal methods (the pill, patch, Nuvaring), barrier methods (condoms diaphragms), IUDs (copper hormonal inserts), natural methods (abstinence withdrawal), emergency contraception (plan B pill) and abortion.. The American birth control movement specifically began in 1914, and intended to make contraception more accessible to the American people through education and legalization. The legalization of birth control and abortion in the US has been has been extremely controversial, bringing to light many heavily weighted moral questions. Some of these questions being, what is the place of women in society? Does life begin at conception? Is access to birth control a human right? These questions are still up for debate today, with religion, culture and social status contributing to peoples differing opinions and arguments. Medical advancements such as the hormonal birth control pill in the 50s 60s began to change the role of women in American society, with many more women able to attend and graduate college. Linda Gordon described birth control as a major factor in the development of womens sexuality in her book The Moral Property of Women: A History of Birth Control and Politics in America. She also expressed, contraception promised the final elimination of womens only significant biological disadvantage. (The capacity to reproduce is not a disadvantage, but lack of control over it is.) This, to me, is a profound idea. That women began to make the ascent from second class citizen to first class citizen, all because they gained the ability to control when or if they became pregnant. As the early 1900s feminists began to push for accessible contraceptives, many people pushed back. Sex was commonly viewed as something only for reproduction, and not for pleasure. Sexual matters were not discussed in public politics, only in private. Linda Gordan explains that this mentality came to be because of agricultural development. As human beings made the transformation from nomadic hunters gatherers to farmers, children became an asset rather than a liability. The larger the family, the more people to work on the farm. However, infant mortality was high at this time, so women had to birth more babies than actually needed. This led to the overall idea that women have a divine obligation to motherhood and the family. After all, this need for constant reproduction did not last. Medical advancements have led to the decrease in infant mortality, and urbanization has made children more of an expense than a resource. This unfortunately began to cause an increase in self-induced a nd unsafe abortions in the early 1900s, specifically among lower income women. Emma Goldman, Mary Dennett, and Margaret Sanger led a group of political radicals in New York City, who aimed to legalize contraceptives in order to prevent these unsafe abortions. Margaret Sanger even opened the first clinic for female contraceptives in 1916, but the police immediately shut it down and she served 30 days in jail. The public began to develop an interest in the birth control conversation after World War 1, when many soldiers came home infected with STDs and STIs. Finally, sexual health became a matter that could be discussed in politics, not just in private. As the publics attitude toward birth control changed, Sanger was able to successfully reopen her contraceptive clinic in 1923. In 1942 Planned Parenthood was formed, opening a network of birth control clinics all across the country. The development of the hormonal birth control pill in the 50s changed American life in many ways. It has brought about economic benefits, causing one-third of the female wage gains from the 60s through the 90s. The teenage pregnancy rate has also been effected, with a steady decline from the 50s until now. Like I previously mentioned, womens accessibility to education has skyrocketed, with only 8% of women being college graduates in the 70s, to 35% of women being college graduates today. With the ability to have sex without producing children, people are now dating more in their early 20s and getting married later, and divorce rates have gone down. Although the benefits of modern contraceptives are seemingly endless, the right to access birth control in the US is still being threatened. In May of this year, 2018, the Trump Administration proposed a reform to the Title X grant program, which provides funding for Planned Parenthood. It was proposed that any clinic that preforms or refers women for abortions would no longer be eligible for government funding. The major problem with this is that Planned Parenthood not only provides abortions, they also prescribe birth control, provide cancer screening and protection, offer pregnancy testing and prenatal services, and provide both men and women with STD testing and treatments, regardless of whether or not you have health insurance. Abortion services only made up 3% of the services Planned Parenthood preformed for the community in 2013 and 2014. It is vital that we defend Planned Parenthood and the right to access affordable contraceptives. History has shown us that access to birth c ontrol has only ever increased our quality of life, increased womens access to education, and decreased the number of self-preformed and dangerous abortions. Overall, society is bettered by access to sexual education and contraceptives, and we must protect this right.

What Does the Law Say About Prayer in School

One of the most highly debated topics revolves around prayer in school. Both sides of the argument are very passionate about their stance, and there have been many legal challenges about whether to include or exclude prayer in school. Before the 1960s there was very little resistance to teaching religious principles, Bible reading, or prayer in school—in fact, it was the norm. You could walk into virtually any public school and see examples of teacher-led prayer and Bible reading. Most of the relevant legal cases ruling on the issue have occurred over the last fifty years. The Supreme Court has ruled on many cases that have shaped our current interpretation of the First Amendment in regards to prayer in school. Each case has added a new dimension or twist to that interpretation. The most quoted argument against prayer in school is that of â€Å"separation of church and state.† This was actually derived from a letter that Thomas Jefferson had written in 1802, in response to a letter he had received from the Danbury Baptist Association of Connecticut concerning religious freedoms. It was not or is not part of the First Amendment. However, those words from Thomas Jefferson led the Supreme Court to rule in the 1962 case, Engel v. Vitale, that any prayer led by a public school district is unconstitutional sponsorship of religion. Relevant Court Cases McCollum v. Board of Education Dist. 71, 333 U.S. 203 (1948): The court found that religious instruction in public schools was unconstitutional due to a violation of the establishment clause. Engel v. Vitale, 82 S. Ct. 1261 (1962):  The landmark case concerning prayer in school. This case brought in the phrase â€Å"separation of church and State†. The court ruled that any type of prayer led by a public school district is unconstitutional. Abington School District v. Schempp, 374 U.S. 203 (1963):  Court rules that reading the Bible over the school intercom is unconstitutional. Murray v. Curlett, 374 U.S. 203 (1963):  Court rules that requiring students to participate in prayer and/or Bible reading is unconstitutional. Lemon v. Kurtzman, 91 S. Ct. 2105 (1971):  Known as the Lemon test. This case established a three-part test for determining if an action of government violates the First Amendments separation of church and state: the government action must have a secular purpose;its primary purpose must not be to inhibit or to advance religion;there must be no excessive entanglement between government and religion. Stone v. Graham, (1980):  Made it unconstitutional to post the Ten Commandments on the wall at a public school. Wallace v. Jaffree, 105 S. Ct. 2479 (1985):  This case dealt with a state’s statute requiring a moment of silence in public schools. The Court ruled that this was unconstitutional where the legislative record revealed that motivation for the statute was to encourage prayer. Westside Community Board of Education v. Mergens, (1990):  Ruled that schools must allow student groups to meet to pray and worship if other non-religious groups are also allowed to meet on school property. Lee v. Weisman, 112 S. Ct. 2649 (1992):  This ruling made it unconstitutional for a school district to have any clergy member perform nondenominational prayer at an elementary or secondary school graduation. Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe, (2000):  The court ruled that students may not use a school’s loudspeaker system for a student-led, student-initiated prayer. Guidelines for Religious Expression in Public Schools In 1995, under the direction of President Bill Clinton, the United States Secretary of Education Richard Riley released a set of guidelines entitled Religious Expression in Public Schools. This set of guidelines was sent to every school superintendent in the country with the purpose of ending confusion regarding religious expression in public schools. These guidelines were updated in 1996 and again in 1998, and still hold true today. It is important that administrators, teachers, parents, and students understand their constitutional right in the matter of prayer in school. Student prayer and religious discussion. Students have the right to engage in individual and group prayer as well as religious discussion throughout the school day so long as it is not conducted in a disruptive manner or during school activities and/or instruction. Students may also participate in before or after school events with religious content, but school officials may not discourage nor encourage participation in such an event.Graduation prayer and baccalaureates. Schools may not mandate or organize prayer at graduation or organize baccalaureate ceremonies. Schools are permitted to open their facilities to private groups so long as all groups have equal access to those facilities under the same terms.Official neutrality regarding religious activity. School administrators and teachers, when serving those capacities, may not solicit or encourage religious activity. Likewise, they also may not prohibit such activity.Teaching about religion. Public schools may not provide religiou s instruction, but they may teach about religion. Schools also are not allowed to observe holidays as religious events or promote such observance by students.Student assignments. Students may express their beliefs about religion in homework, art, orally, or in the written form.Religious literature. Students may distribute religious literature to their classmates on the same terms as other groups are allowed to distribute non-school related literature.Student garb. Students may display religious messages on items of clothing to the same extent that they are permitted to display other comparable messages.

Jesus For As Long As I - 1556 Words

I grew up in Taranaki and Wanganui, and I have known Jesus for as long as I can remember. At the age of 7, on Sunday the 3rd of September 2003, I gave my heart to God, and became a Junior Soldier of The Salvation Army Wanganui City Corps. Throughout my childhood I saw the hand of God in many places. My Mum and Dad and been hospitalised a number of times while we were growing up for number of reasons, and yet both Mum and Dad were strong in their faith. As a family we attended the Wanganui City Corps until early 2001, when Mum and Dad decided to leave the Army, and we moved to the Hosanna Christian Centre. Hosanna Christian Centre was a Pentecostal charismatic church. During our time at this Church, I was baptised, and had also had an encounter with the Holy Spirit. The encounter seems a long time ago, but every week I remembered praying to God, and asking him to help me â€Å"lead a life that is clean in thought word and deed.† As I did this, my behaviour at school changed dra matically. At times when I was not behaving, my teacher would remind me that as someone who claims to follow Christ, my actions should reflect the nature of the Christ I claim to represent. As a result my behaviour improved. In July 2005 our family moved to Pukekohe, which was a difficult move, as it occurred during my second year at Immediate School. When we moved to Pukekohe, we attended the Elim Christian Centre because the Pastor from Hosanna in Wanganui was now an Assistant Pastor at Elim. Question: Discuss about the Evidence Based Practice in Nursing Care. Answer: Introduction: Nursing care is concerned with investigation of the patients needs and then administration of interventions for addressing those needs. Evidence based practice is a scientific and realistic searching technique that yields optimal and high quality care results (DiCenso, Guyatt Ciliska, 2014). It is more of a problem solving approach that on one hand is highly cost effective and in other hand provides far more satisfactory results than the traditional approaches. This technique has seven steps starting with creating a valid enquiry, asking reasonable clinical PICO questions, searching nursing databases with the questions, critically evaluating the evidence and ending in the selection of the best intervention applicable for the respective patient (Hastings Fisher, 2014). This report will attempt to apply the first two steps of the evidence based practice in the case of a patient suffering from knee pain. Case scenario: In this case scenario a middle aged AFL player, Kasim, is suffering from knee pan and has been prescribed to use celecoxib 200 mg/day, an NSAID drug or glucosamine 1500 mg/day. Out of the two treatment options the patient has to choose one as per his convenience, and prior o that the patient is eager to discover knowledge about both the medications, the pro and cons of each in detail. Application of evidence based practice can help the nurse educate the patient about his treatment options in the most scientific and reasonable manner in just two simple steps: Clinical Questions: In men with knee pain which treatment option is more effective between celecoxib and glucosamine: Key words /search items/phrase Alternative words P In knee pain In a patient suffering from joint pain I Is celecoxib non steroidal medication C Compared to Glucosamine Steroidal pain medication O Best option for relieving pain without any side effects? Is the better alternative? Database search: The next step in the evidence based practice is selecting a nursing database for conducting key word search based on the PICO questions. There are a number of nursing databases that can be used for the purpose like MEDLINE or CINAHL. The purpose behind choosing theses two websites are their excellence in the field of nursing. Both of them are easily the largest databases existing that serve us with countless valuable journals and CINAHL with much more. This is the reason these two databases are abundantly used for the evidence based practice in nursing using PICO questioning, and among both of them the database chosen for the assignment is CINAHL or Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature as it covers more diversity within the field of nursing and health care and also for the fact that it includes books, dissertations, audio visual resources and conference papers as well. The steroidal medication like glucasamine however, are similar in therapeutic activity but are narcotics hence can be dangerous in case overdosage of prolonged use. Nonsteroidal medication are definitely the safer option especially with celecoxi which is very effective in joint pain but nonsteroidal medication have a number of side effects as well like vomiting and nausea hence dosage should be carefully calculated according to the article by Wei at al. 2013 (Wei at al., 2013). Conclusion: Nursing is the noble profession of care, an occupation that is people focused, on their needs and grievances. The responsibility of a nurse is multidimensional, with interconnected spectrums coming together in a single outcome, optimal care delivery to each and every patient. Along the years the health care has advanced considerably and with it the operational strategies and techniques have advanced as well. Evidence based practice is another advanced trick that has emerged in the last decade that has changed the health care standards and with the new advancements like this coming everyday it will continue to do so.
