As the publics attitude toward birth control changed, Sanger was able to successfully reopen her contraceptive clinic in 1923. In 1942 Planned Parenthood was formed, opening a network of birth control clinics all across the country. The development of the hormonal birth control pill in the 50s changed American life in many ways. It has brought about economic benefits, causing one-third of the female wage gains from the 60s through the 90s. The teenage pregnancy rate has also been effected, with a steady decline from the 50s until now. Like I previously mentioned, womens accessibility to education has skyrocketed, with only 8% of women being college graduates in the 70s, to 35% of women being college graduates today. With the ability to have sex without producing children, people are now dating more in their early 20s and getting married later, and divorce rates have gone down. Although the benefits of modern contraceptives are seemingly endless, the right to access birth control in the US is still being threatened. In May of this year, 2018, the Trump Administration proposed a reform to the Title X grant program, which provides funding for Planned Parenthood. It was proposed that any clinic that preforms or refers women for abortions would no longer be eligible for government funding. The major problem with this is that Planned Parenthood not only provides abortions, they also prescribe birth control, provide cancer screening and protection, offer pregnancy testing and prenatal services, and provide both men and women with STD testing and treatments, regardless of whether or not you have health insurance. Abortion services only made up 3% of the services Planned Parenthood preformed for the community in 2013 and 2014. It is vital that we defend Planned Parenthood and the right to access affordable contraceptives. History has shown us that access to birth c ontrol has only ever increased our quality of life, increased womens access to education, and decreased the number of self-preformed and dangerous abortions. Overall, society is bettered by access to sexual education and contraceptives, and we must protect this right.

What Does the Law Say About Prayer in School

One of the most highly debated topics revolves around prayer in school. Both sides of the argument are very passionate about their stance, and there have been many legal challenges about whether to include or exclude prayer in school. Before the 1960s there was very little resistance to teaching religious principles, Bible reading, or prayer in school—in fact, it was the norm. You could walk into virtually any public school and see examples of teacher-led prayer and Bible reading. Most of the relevant legal cases ruling on the issue have occurred over the last fifty years. The Supreme Court has ruled on many cases that have shaped our current interpretation of the First Amendment in regards to prayer in school. Each case has added a new dimension or twist to that interpretation. The most quoted argument against prayer in school is that of â€Å"separation of church and state.† This was actually derived from a letter that Thomas Jefferson had written in 1802, in response to a letter he had received from the Danbury Baptist Association of Connecticut concerning religious freedoms. It was not or is not part of the First Amendment. However, those words from Thomas Jefferson led the Supreme Court to rule in the 1962 case, Engel v. Vitale, that any prayer led by a public school district is unconstitutional sponsorship of religion. Relevant Court Cases McCollum v. Board of Education Dist. 71, 333 U.S. 203 (1948): The court found that religious instruction in public schools was unconstitutional due to a violation of the establishment clause. Engel v. Vitale, 82 S. Ct. 1261 (1962):  The landmark case concerning prayer in school. This case brought in the phrase â€Å"separation of church and State†. The court ruled that any type of prayer led by a public school district is unconstitutional. Abington School District v. Schempp, 374 U.S. 203 (1963):  Court rules that reading the Bible over the school intercom is unconstitutional. Murray v. Curlett, 374 U.S. 203 (1963):  Court rules that requiring students to participate in prayer and/or Bible reading is unconstitutional. Lemon v. Kurtzman, 91 S. Ct. 2105 (1971):  Known as the Lemon test. This case established a three-part test for determining if an action of government violates the First Amendments separation of church and state: the government action must have a secular purpose;its primary purpose must not be to inhibit or to advance religion;there must be no excessive entanglement between government and religion. Stone v. Graham, (1980):  Made it unconstitutional to post the Ten Commandments on the wall at a public school. Wallace v. Jaffree, 105 S. Ct. 2479 (1985):  This case dealt with a state’s statute requiring a moment of silence in public schools. The Court ruled that this was unconstitutional where the legislative record revealed that motivation for the statute was to encourage prayer. Westside Community Board of Education v. Mergens, (1990):  Ruled that schools must allow student groups to meet to pray and worship if other non-religious groups are also allowed to meet on school property. Lee v. Weisman, 112 S. Ct. 2649 (1992):  This ruling made it unconstitutional for a school district to have any clergy member perform nondenominational prayer at an elementary or secondary school graduation. Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe, (2000):  The court ruled that students may not use a school’s loudspeaker system for a student-led, student-initiated prayer. Guidelines for Religious Expression in Public Schools In 1995, under the direction of President Bill Clinton, the United States Secretary of Education Richard Riley released a set of guidelines entitled Religious Expression in Public Schools. This set of guidelines was sent to every school superintendent in the country with the purpose of ending confusion regarding religious expression in public schools. These guidelines were updated in 1996 and again in 1998, and still hold true today. It is important that administrators, teachers, parents, and students understand their constitutional right in the matter of prayer in school. Student prayer and religious discussion. Students have the right to engage in individual and group prayer as well as religious discussion throughout the school day so long as it is not conducted in a disruptive manner or during school activities and/or instruction. Students may also participate in before or after school events with religious content, but school officials may not discourage nor encourage participation in such an event.Graduation prayer and baccalaureates. Schools may not mandate or organize prayer at graduation or organize baccalaureate ceremonies. Schools are permitted to open their facilities to private groups so long as all groups have equal access to those facilities under the same terms.Official neutrality regarding religious activity. School administrators and teachers, when serving those capacities, may not solicit or encourage religious activity. Likewise, they also may not prohibit such activity.Teaching about religion. Public schools may not provide religiou s instruction, but they may teach about religion. Schools also are not allowed to observe holidays as religious events or promote such observance by students.Student assignments. Students may express their beliefs about religion in homework, art, orally, or in the written form.Religious literature. Students may distribute religious literature to their classmates on the same terms as other groups are allowed to distribute non-school related literature.Student garb. I grew up in Taranaki and Wanganui, and I have known Jesus for as long as I can remember. At the age of 7, on Sunday the 3rd of September 2003, I gave my heart to God, and became a Junior Soldier of The Salvation Army Wanganui City Corps. Throughout my childhood I saw the hand of God in many places. My Mum and Dad and been hospitalised a number of times while we were growing up for number of reasons, and yet both Mum and Dad were strong in their faith. As a family we attended the Wanganui City Corps until early 2001, when Mum and Dad decided to leave the Army, and we moved to the Hosanna Christian Centre. Hosanna Christian Centre was a Pentecostal charismatic church. During our time at this Church, I was baptised, and had also had an encounter with the Holy Spirit. The encounter seems a long time ago, but every week I remembered praying to God, and asking him to help me â€Å"lead a life that is clean in thought word and deed.† As I did this, my behaviour at school changed dra matically. At times when I was not behaving, my teacher would remind me that as someone who claims to follow Christ, my actions should reflect the nature of the Christ I claim to represent. As a result my behaviour improved. In July 2005 our family moved to Pukekohe, which was a difficult move, as it occurred during my second year at Immediate School. Marijuana History Marijuana originated in the middle east (Taiwan, Korea). China plays an important part in Marijuana's history. Hoatho, the first chinese physician to use Cannabis for medical purposes as a painkiller and anesthetic for surgery. In the Ninth Century B.C., it was used as an incense by the Assyrians Herbal, a Chinese book of medicine from the second Century B.C., was first to describe it in print. It was used as an anesthetic 5,000 years ago in ancient china. Many (*) ancient cultures such as the persians, Greeks, East Indians, Romans, and the Assyrians for many things. These were what they used it for: the control of muscle spasms, reduction of pain, and for indegestion. Imagine that if they still practiced this, instead of taking an Alka Seltzer after you had mom's Chili or Tacos, you might be sitting in the living room on the LAY-Z Boy, smoking a joint or however they would take it. The folk medicine of Africa and Asia have used it as an herbal preparation. A "mythical" and "legendary" pharmacist and emperor Shen Nung thought using it as a seditive was all right. In 2,700 B.C. that same "mythical" emperor said it helped female weakness, gout, rheumatism, malaria, beri-beri (?), contipation, and absentmindedness. In 1979 (A.D.) Carlton E. Turner visited China and found marijuana was not in use in formal medical places. J. D. P. Graham of the Welsh National School of Medicine wrote, "One not need take to seriously the anecdotal use of it's use for many purposes in China or by the Hindus in the pre-Christian Millennia ...and by the Arabs!" In 1890 in England's "Lancet" said cannabis extract was good for neuralgia, fits, migraine and psychosomatic disorders but not for rheumatic conditions. It is not easy to tell the dosage because of the variations in potency and the irregularity in absorbtion. The time delay before the onset of the possible effects of marijuana lowered it's popularity as a medicine as did the introduction of a variety of new and better medicines like aspirin, morpheine (habit forming), chloral, barbituates tranquilizers, and when it got on the list of drugs thought by the world community to require legal restrictions. Our first President, George Washington, grew cannabis on his plantation. The cannabis he grew was more fibrous and is better known as hemp. Hemp was used to make rope, twine, paper and canvas (the word "canvas" comes from Cannabis) and was an important crop in the american colonies. In Jamestown, Virginia it was grown for it's fiber qualities in 1611. (Snyder, 1985) The U.S. Pharmacopeia had it listed as a useful medicine from the year 1870 to 1941. A Pharmacopeia is "a book of directions and requirements for the preparations of medicines, generally published by an authority; a collection or stock of drugs." This tells us the U.S. Pharmacopeia was an authority on the use of drugs for medical purposes, and said that the use of marijuana for said purposes was helpful. The U.S. Pharmacopeia last listed cannabis ("the dried flower tops of the pistillate plants of cannabis sativa") in 1936.(Lovinge,1985,p434) That years epitome of the pharmacopeia and the national formula described the drug for physicians thus:"a narcotic poison, producing a mild delirium. Used in sedative mixtures but of doubtful value. Also employed to color corn remedies." The next pharmacopeia released in 1942 (I gather they were relaesed every six years) did not have cannabis sativa in it. "The 1937 U.S. dispensatory said:"Cannabis is used in medicine to relieve pain, encourage sleep, and to soothe restlessness. We have very little definite knowledge of the effects of therapeutic quantities, but in some persons it appears to produce a euphoria and will often relieve migrainic headaches. One of the great hindrances to the wider use of this drug is the great variability and the potency of different samples of Cannabis which renders it impossible to approximate the proper dose of any individual smaple except by clinical trial. Because of occasional unpleasant symptoms from unusually potent preparations, physicians have generally been overcaustious in the quantities administered. The only way of determining the dose of an individual preparation is to give it in ascending quantities until some effect is produced. (The Book suggested using a fluid extract - powdered cannabis in solution, 4/5 alcohol - three times a day, starting with two or three minims.)"(Lovinge,1985,p434) Extracts, tinctures, and herbal packages of cannabis manufactured by many drug companies, was available in any pharmacy until 1941 when "The two main professional directories of drugs in the United States" dropped it.(Snnyder 1985,p38) It is still used
